First Breakfast
An espisode tag for The High Riders/The Homecoming

After the signing...

“John, I’ll be with you today. You’ll need a good cowpony.” Murdoch pointed his fork at Johnny as he ate his breakfast.

“I can ride Barranca” Johnny gave his father a steady stare not liking this turn of events. All these orders, being told what and how to do all the time was not how he was used to living.

“Scott, you ride with Cipriano. Time to break you boys in, get you ready for your first cattle drive.” Murdoch had ignored Johnny and moved on to his brother.

“You’ll both need experienced, trained horses to get you through the day.” He emphasized the word, trained and looked back at Johnny as he continued, “I ll also remind you, one man will call the tune here at Lancer and that will be me.”

“Sir, we’ll look forward to the experience.” Scott lifted his coffee cup as if in salute first to Murdoch and then with a half smile to Johnny.

“Experience. You got any ‘experience’ herdin’ cows, Boston?” Johnny drained the last of his coffee, grabbed a biscuit, and stood to leave.

“No, but I’m sure I’ll adapt. We have excellent teachers and as Murdoch says, we’ll be provided with trained horses to get us through. Besides, we can help each other along as we learn, right, Brother?”

Johnny grinned around his biscuit. “Just don’t end up in that ditch, Brother.”

“And you watch your back, lot of back-shooting going on around here, Brother.” Scott hollered as Johnny went out the kitchen door.
