Jean Lancret, a French supporter of Bonnie Prince Charlie was killed at Battle of Culloden, east of Inverness. His wife of less than six months, Ailsa nee MacKenzie (d.1800) returned to her family near Inverness with her unborn child . A son , whom she named John after his father, was born early December 1746. To avoid identification as a Jacobite, she was persuaded by her family to drop the ‘t' from her last name and to change the pronunciation to ‘Lancer'. With gold left by her husband and help from her family a small estate was purchased for the benefit of her son, who when he came of age became what was called a ‘bonnet laird', a landowner who farmed his land himself rather than employing or renting out to others to do it. |
