DaleL

Walk

Bartlett was a good man. She had stayed with him longer than any of the others but she also knew that one day she would leave. Once she had tried to be someone she was not, tried to meekly conform to the demands placed upon a woman by society. The blue-eyed boy sleeping in the shack the three of them shared was proof of that. The tall gringo had said that he loved her but almost immediately he tried to change her, to mold her into his image of what a proper wife and mother should be. She did not know when her love had turned into hate but she knew that in order to be herself, to be free, she had to leave. That day would come again and when it did, she would gather up her son and walk out the door without a backward glance.
