Johnny

Here, Kitty

June Challenge. This is for June 2, "Hug your cat day"

"Here kitty, here kitty"..

Scott heard a soft sound coming from his brother's room. The door was open so he walked in. He was amused at the site of his brother's upended rump as Johnny was on his knees, head stuck under the bed.

"Lose something?" Scott asked.

Johnny jumped, hitting his head on the bed board, turned around and ended sitting on the floor by his bed.  "Jesus Scott, I told you not to do that! You sound just like the old man!" groused Johnny as he rubbed his head.

"Again, little brother, did you lose something, and can I help?"

"Oh' it's nothing" Johnny lied. Seeing that was not going to work with Scott, he finally fessed up. "If you must know, I am looking for Penny!"

"Penny? Johnny what have you brought home this time?  You know Murdoch has told you no more strays!"

"She ain't a stray. She is one of the barn cats, an' I named her Penny. Satisfied?"

Scott shaking his head with his arms folded over his chest thought knowing his brother that sounded perfectly normal. "And just why isn't Penny in the barn where she belongs? Is she catching mice under your bed?"

"No, Scott.  She just lost her litter when they were born too early. She looked sad, and a little lonely, so I brought her in my room to keep her company last night. I guess she left my room sometime before I woke up".

Scott, knowing his brother's soft nature with animals was touched by Johnny's explanation.  "Okay Johnny, let's go find Penny before Murdoch does. You know how he feels about cats in the house." extending his hand to his brother to help him off the floor.  "You better hope Murdoch has not left his bedroom door open."

Johnny paled at the thought.

The search was on. After checking the rooms upstairs, coming up empty, they started downstairs. The kitchen area was clear, so it was time to check the study and great room. As the boys were headed to the study, they heard a slight humming sound coming from the great room. As they entered, Murdoch's chair was facing toward the window. Murdoch Stopped humming, but did not turn around. He spoke in a gruff voice.

"Lose something, John?"  Johnny and Scott looked at each other, and Johnny whispered "I'm dead!" Scott grabbed Johnny's arm before he could flee.
Murdoch turned the chair around and in his arms was Penny, purring and looking very contented. Scott laughed at the shocked look on Johnny's face.

Johnny got up his nerve and asked "Hi, what are you doing there, Pa?"

Murdoch smiled at his son and replied. "I am hugging our cat, son! I have become quite friendly with her as I make my daily trips to the barn. Care to tell me why she is not in the barn, my son?"

Well, ya' see Pa......
